Sebastian Prost co-organised the workshop “Rooting for Change: Regenerative Digital Technology” at Chalmers University. The full-day workshop explored critical perspectives at the intersection of regenerative ecologies and digital technology. In the morning, we heard about four different concepts that use metaphors to develop and use technologies in a more responsible way – from Jon Rogers (Northumbria Uni) on rewilding the internet, Sebastian on digital agroecology, Vasilis Ntouros (Newcastle Uni) on community-supported software, and Juliette Waltregny (Chalmers Uni) on permacomputing.
In the afternoon, participants used prompt cards we produced for each of these concepts to apply them to one of two case studies – a food forest canvas too and a soil stories device. Working in three groups, participants presented conceptual designs and reflections on using the cards in the process. Going forward, we hope to refine the cards and run further workshops.
